Restoring a corrupted profile

If you have a corrupted profile, follow these simple steps for a quick fix.

Get to your C drive.

Make sure you can view hidden folders.

Choose Program Data, then Nuance, then NaturallySpeaking12.

Click on the user folder.

Select your profile.

Take the backup folder, copy it, then paste.

Rename your “current” folder to “current – old” (There is a space between the hyphen on both sides).

Your copied backup folder (reads Backup-copy) must now be renamed to “current”.

Restart dragon, issue fixed.

If you are using Dragon Medical Practice edition 2 and you need to bring your profile over to a new computer, the task may seem daunting at first. What about your commands? What about your hotkeys? How will you bring over the trained vocab you have done over the years?

Worry not, for it is incredibly simple. All you need is a USB stick and a few minutes.

First, go to the computer where you currently have Dragon installed. Go to profile, “Manage User Profiles”, click your profile to highlight it, then click the “Advanced” button. Choose “Export” and then send it to your USB stick.

Take the USB stick, pop it in the new computer. You then follow the same steps.  Go to profile, “Manage User Profiles”, click your profile to highlight it, then click the “Advanced” button. This time choose “Import”. Select the file from the location on the USB and let Dragon do the rest.

Scribes vs. Dragon Medical

Why Scribes should not be used:

• Most scribes are not licensed.
• Medical scribes are an intrusion into patient’s privacy and may cause a patient to hide critical health information.  It’s hard to connect with one person examining your body, let alone with a second person with possibly no medical background.
• Medical scribes can translate incorrectly, compromising patient care.  Ever play the “Telephone Game” or “Pass the Message”.  The original message is never the same as the original. 
• Medical scribes make providers free of accountability.  (“That’s not what I said.”)
• Medical scribes in the ER only add another body and more confusion to an already fast paced critical setting. 
• Scribes can get sick!  Then what does the doctor do?
• Scribes waste time writing and then typing the patient note into the EMR.  They certainly don’t speak it in with Dragon, because if they did, they would see how easy enough it would be for the provider to speak it in themselves.

If you have an EHR that connects through Citrix…

If your EHR is connecting through a Ctrix environment, you will run into one particular issue with Dragon Medical practice edition 2: fragmented text into free text areas in the EMR. When Dragon is used on a local application like Microsoft word, there is no problem. Any application that doesn’t require access through citrix will work. The only work around that the programmers at Nuance provided me with is to use the dictation box and transfer text (there is also a button you would check to keep the text in the clip board). Alternatively, the programmer told me that you can get the network edition of Dragon—but it’s much more expensive (you must license the server for about 10K and each client access license, aka: CAL or user, for around $2,200). This would have to be done through nuance directly. I’m more than willing to show the physicians how to use the dictation box to transfer the text, as it is an easy enough work around that still saves physicians plenty of time.
